I am delighted to be giving a practical introduction to traditional
eisa dance at the
Taiko Spirit Retreat 2022.
We will learn roles from
michiwa-kuduchi 道輪口説 in the henna-eisa 平安Wエイサー version.
Focus will be put on
- the choreographic form
- the structure of the piece (rhythm, calls, spatial arrangement)
- ki-ai (breathing, energy, presence, body awareness)
- the cohesion in the group
Workshop 1 includes the role of
paarankuu players.
Workshop 2 builds on workshop 1. Workshop 2 participants will learn how to hold the play together during a performance. It is mainly about the role of the foremost
paarankuu player, who leads the line, and the
kokkei dancers, who clear the way with a
hatagashira (flagpole) and a vessel hanging from a bamboo bar. Participation in Workshop 2 requires participation in Workshop 1.
