Hoshipedia: News
This will be a wiki with bookmarks to news sources, with the means I have found useful to follow them.
Usually I prefer not to follow feeds to news, as the number of stories tends to be overwhelming (I do follow some feeds to blogs; especially to blogs that have infrequent posts, since otherwise I would not know (without checking) whether there is a new post.
However, if I find that there is no other reasonable way to follow a news source without submitting to lots of tracking and ads, I will include it here.
For some news sources, the best method is to visit their website with a browser that blocks all ads, trackers and JavaScript disabled. When this is true and it works, I use a dedicated browser for this purpose. Mullvad on the desktop; Tor on Android.
For other news sources there are anti-paywall browser plugins that enable one to read for free. I will include information about this here.
At least one of my sources has a Substack, but it is possible to subscribe to his posts by email.
Then there are podcasts, which usually can be listened to for free. For these, I use the Podverse Android app, which is available through FDroid. If one uses a VPN wth a server in which the podcast does not advertize, one can often hear the podcast ad-free.
Extracting news from the internet, without paywalls, trackers, ads etc. is not so simple and a variety of methods nead to be employed. It is also not simple for news media to make money. It's the cases in which we both have to pay and submit to being tracked that are the most annoying. Since it is not feasible for most people to pay for subscriptions to a variety of different journals, I think there needs to be some system that permits one to make micropayments across the web for the articles one actually reads. I'm waiting to see this adopted by news sites.
All sources are in English.
