Attention is fundamental to dance. When dancing, we pay attention to our movements, as well as the emotions and desires that drive, and are produced, by our dancing. Attention is also the very thing that our late-capitalist societies incessantly demand from us. The modes of consumption found in these spaces are hyper-fast and saturated with stimuli. They demand that we notice them with a fierce intensity. Everything must be new, every moment must be exciting.
Against this social backdrop, three artists – Han Yeonji, Dapheny Chen and Lee Mun Wai – each frame their dance / choreographic practices around the notion of attention to develop strategies of resistance. They create dancing bodies that are collective instead of singular; extended instead of fragmented, complex instead of reductive. These strategies shift the act of dancing away from aesthetic production and consumption, towards modes in which dancing becomes an act of dynamic learning and understanding of our complex relationships with our surroundings.

주의 집중은 춤에 있어 기본적인 요소이다. 춤추는 과정에서 우리는 움직임 뿐만 아니라 춤을 이끌고, 춤으로 인해 생성되는 감정과 욕망에도 주의를 기울인다. 또한 주의 집중은 후기 자본주의 사회에서 우리에게 끊임없이 요구되는 것이기도 하다. 이러한 공간에서의 소비 방식은 초고속이며 자극적이며, 우리의 강렬한 주목을 요구한다. 모든 것이 새롭고 모든 순간이 흥미로워야 한다.
이 사회적 배경 속에서, 다페니 첸, 리 문 와이, 한연지는 각자 '주의 집중'이라는 개념을 중심으로 무용 및 안무 작업을 구성하여 저항 전략을 개발한다. 그들은 단일이 아닌 집단적인 춤추는 몸을 창조하고, 파편화된 것이 아닌 확장된 몸, 환원적이 아닌 복합적인 몸을 만든다. 이러한 전략은 미적 생산과 소비에서 벗어나 무용을 주변 환경과의 복잡한 관계를 역동적으로 학습하고 이해하는 행위로 전환시킨다.
